We will be learning about multiplication as counting groups of objects and understanding that repeated addition, skip counting and multiplication are the same. We will also begin to explore division and fractions (halves, thirds, fourths).
At home:
1. Give your child objects in groups, such as 6 groups of 5 beans. Have your child show you how to find out how many beans in all and to write a repeated addition sentence.
2. Find examples of items that come packaged in groups, such as stamps. Ask your child to write a repeated addition sentence and a multiplication sentecne to find how many items there are altogether.
3. Have your child find out how many pieces of fruit, such as grapes, can be fairly divided among a group of friends or family.
4. Have your child sort a number of objects (divisible by 4) into groups of 4. Ask how many groups he or she made.
5. Let your child work with fractions during meals. Show your child a sandwich in halves, a pear cut into fourths, and so on. Have hime or her name the fraction.
6. Find examples of items that come packaged in groups, such as rolls. Ask your child to tell you how many are in one-half of the package.
